Buying Fish Tanks in New Jersey

If you are a freshwater aquarium enthusiast living in New Jersey, you can find a wealth of aquarium dealers and aquarium supply stores that sell tropical fish, tropical fish tanks, both freshwater and saltwater, and aquarium supplies and more.

PetCo, of course, is one place you can go to buy freshwater aquarium fish and supplies with locations throughout New Jersey.  But I find the selection very ordinary, the help that works there very uneven in terms of knowledge and the fish of questionable health.  Again, it depends on the specific store and the time of day you shop and who happens to be working in the fish department that day. 

For fish tanks, freshwater aquarium supplies (saltwater, too), aquarium filters etc., their prices are good and I recommend them highly.  For live fish, buyer beware.

Smaller boutique stores that cater to the freshwater aquarium enthusiast are much better for buying live fish and the staffs are particularly knowledgeable about what they sell.  Often, the owner of the store can be found working on the sale floor so that should say something right there. 

My favorite place for buying freshwater aquarium fish is Absolutely Fish in Clifton, NJ. Absolutely Fish is a tropical fish store built by tropical fish enthusiasts for tropical fish enthusiasts.  While their prices are higher than the local PetCo, the fish are much healthier and the staff is top notch.

Buying fish tank aquariums and fish tank setups and supplies, however, I see as more of a commodity item.  A filter pad is a filter pad is a filter pad, if you know what I mean.

That’s not to say that the specialty stores do not have sales and special promotions on buying fish tanks and aquarium supplies, but the everyday low prices of the big box stores, along with some online stores, is hard to beat.
